Global Gaming Expo 2016 - Table Games Part 1

Global Gaming Expo 2016 - Table Games Part 1

Last week, I discussed some of the Blackjack variants and sidebets that will be on display at the Scientific Games booth at the Global Gaming Expo that begins today.  This week, I'll give a preview of some of their poker-based table games.  For those of you who are regular readers, you know that I will not find it surprising that virtually all of their table games are fitting into one of these two categories - Blackjack and Poker.  Many inventors have tried to break this mold, and none have succeeded.  So, you can question whether the issue is that they haven't hit the right formula yet or if they are fishing in the wrong pond.  The latter still seems to be the likely answer.

G2E 2016 PRE PREVIEW

The Global Gaming Expo is just a few days away.  This week, I'll begin to discuss some of the games that will be on display at the Scientific Games display.  If you take a closer look at the games, you'll see that they are a blend of games from the inside, games from the outside and even some blended sources.  I don't know of any table game company that hasn't promoted games from outside inventors.  The key is a successful game.  The source of the creativity is just not a primary concern.

Back to the Beginning

Back to the Beginning

A couple of weeks ago when I discussed the notion that skill based gaming has existed in casinos for many years, I received numerous comments from readers.  One that I found to be particularly interesting was because it seemingly relegated video poker into the same category as slot machines.  Maybe, even worse.  He basically said that video poker "gave the casinos a license to steal and plain irons people out."  I wrote back to the writer explaining why I disagreed strongly, but I never got a reply.

Can the Wrong Thing Be Right?

Can the Wrong Thing Be Right?

For those who read my column regularly, it may seem as if my columns jump around through unrelated topics.  In one regard, this is essentially correct.  Strategy in blackjack has very little to do with video poker.  Sometimes, I discuss a generic topic about math which is a bit more broad.  And, once in a while, I even surprise myself with how seemingly disparate topics can come together.  Today is one of those days.

Matter of Opinion

Matter of Opinion

Numerous times I've written about how I consider video poker to be more than a game of luck.  Twenty plus years ago, my father wrote about a court case in which a judge determined that video poker is a game of luck, despite my father's testimony to the contrary.  This topic was the center of a conversation I had earlier today with some very knowledgeable people in the industry.

A few months ago, I wrote a column that discussed the value (or lack there of?) of a Suited Hand.  It started by discussing the relative value of a suited pocket hand in Texas Hold'em vs. an unsuited hand.  It then touched on the topics of 3-Card Flush and 2-Card Royals in video poker.  The former is quite unplayable and the latter is just barely playable due to the 800 for 1 payout of the Royal and the added value of the High Cards you would be holding.  It also glanced over the 3-Card Straight Flush.  The black sheep of video poker hands.

Don't Leave Home Without It!

Obviously, I got my math skills from my father, Lenny Frome.  Not that my mother was so bad at math either.  But, from my mom I got my skill to hunt down a bargain, use coupons and send away for rebates.  There are times when it has become more of a game for me than it is about the money.  When I first came to Las Vegas in 1984, casinos used to give out tons of stuff for free - keychains, pictures, food.  I'm not sure what happened to the keychain with my initials on it from the Golden Goose Casino, but I still have the picture of my best friend and myself with the million dollars behind glass at Binion's.

Knowing When to Walk Away

Knowing When to Walk Away

A couple of years ago there was a story going around about a blackjack Player who took the Tropicana in Atlantic City for a lot of money.  While he never admitted it, it was fairly obvious that he was a card counter.  He came in under the radar and by the time it was known what he was doing, it was too late for the casino.  He supposedly won several million, but in interviews he stated that those were his winning trips and that he had some losers in between, so he had not won that much overall.  He stated that his greatest gift at gambling was discipline.  I have to agree that I think this is the most important skill of them all.

Two Pair Overload

Two Pair Overload

How come it seems that you get an overabundance of Two Pairs when you are playing Double Double Bonus Poker.  For those not familiar with this game, it is a variant of video poker that pays only 1 for Two Pair.  This is because it pays some serious payouts for having certain Four of a Kinds with a particular set of Kickers.  Thus, four Aces with a 2/3/4 pays 400 for 1.  This is half of the payout of a Royal which can definitely make for a good night.

Hey Look, a Squirrel!

The inspiration for this week's column comes from a friend of a friend.  A friend of mine has a friend who is an avid fan and frequent player of video poker.  His question was one that I've heard many times throughout the years.  It deals with the method that the video poker machine uses to deal cards - specifically the potential draw cards.

The Outer Limits

The Outer Limits

Expert Strategy consists of three key components - (1) Know which games to play, (2) know the right strategy for those games and (3) know what to expect.   I find the third one to be the most intriguing.  When it comes to video poker, I realize I'm hardly the only source for video poker information.  There are other writers and there is a variety of practice software out there.  These will all help you to learn the first two.  But, I think it is a combination of my math skill and the ability to explain it to the masses that help to separate me from some of these other sources.  One doesn't really need to know what to expect in order to master the first two, but learning it is what keeps the Player disciplined to stick to the plan.

Brimming with Confidence

Brimming with Confidence

Expert Strategy has always been about the long run.  Occasionally, someone has come along and tried to knock it by stating that the long run is so far out there that striving for it is a fool's errand.  Obviously, I disagree.  If it truly took a lifetime of playing, I might agree.  But this is simply not the case.  I can't tell you exactly how long it takes to get to the long run.  First of all, the results depend greatly on the specifics of each game.  Second, the math simply doesn't work like this.

But Can He Shoot Hoops?

But Can He Shoot Hoops?

Several months ago, I listened to a speaker talk about the next wave of games that should be hitting casinos in the coming years.  He was talking about skill-based games.  I loved how he started his discussion, stating that skill-based games have existed for years.  After all, video poker has been around for a couple of decades now.  I almost fell off my chair.  What he stated was incredibly true, and in my opinion incredibly obvious.  But, it just didn't seem to be anything that was stated publicly too often.

Not so Ugly Deuces

Not so Ugly Deuces

Last week I reviewed some relatively common positive paytables.  Positive meaning paytables with a payback of over 100% meaning the Player should win in the long run.  In that column I spoke of a Deuces Wild paytable that meets this qualification.  There are actually more Deuces Wild paytables over 100% than any other variant of video poker.  No one knows the reason for this for sure, but I can only guess it goes back to the early days of video poker before a complete mathematical analysis was run on the game.  I have always surmised that when these original paytables were created that they developers took their 'best guess' as to how Players would play hands instead of fully recognizing that there is only one proper way to play the hand.

Positive Games

I love the look on people's faces when they hear me say that there are some video poker machines with paybacks over 100%.  First, it goes against what we all know to be true - that all games have a casino advantage.  Second, they don't even fully realize what I'm saying.  So, let me make it quite clear.  A payback over 100% means that in the long run, the Player will win money.  This is the total opposite of our thinking for virtually every type of game.  Normally, a casino game offers the Player the opportunity to win in the short run but the Player will still lose over the long run.  With these games over 100%, or what we call positive games, the Player might lose in the short run, but his bankroll should increase over time.

Penalty Cards

Penalty Cards

This is not a topic I cover often.  They were ignored by my father, Lenny Frome.  There are some that took this as an error he made in his video poker analyses.  Nothing could be further from the truth.  He was quite aware of them.  His goal for video poker - and all other games - was to give the Player a strategy he could utilize in the casino.  Video Poker strategy is complex enough for most versions.  Not everyone can master it.  Adding another layer of complexity for a relatively tiny additional return just didn't seem prudent to him.  For the most part, I agree.

Leave the Math to the Professionals

Leave the Math to the Professionals

I've always been good at math.  Well, at least for as long as I can remember.   When I was 8 or 10 years old, this meant that I could quickly add numbers together.  When I got to my pre-teens, it meant that I could quickly multiply numbers together.  I still have these skills.  I pretty much take them for granted and admittedly sometimes am amazed that most everyone else can't do the same.  I don't expect everyone to be able to multiply two 2-digit numbers together, but the numbers of times I'll hear someone ask something like what's 500 divided by 25 and not be able to do the math in a split-second is mind boggling to me.

A Laughing Stock

A Laughing Stock

Invariably when I get into a discussion with someone about the gaming industry, whether it is someone in the industry or not, the game of War comes up.  To be more accurate the name of the game you see in the casino is Casino War.  It really isn't much different than the game you used to play as a kid.  You get one card, Dealer gets one card.  High Card wins.  If you tie, you go to war.  In the casino version it ends at one war in order to keep the speed up and as a means of creating a house edge.  You play for money instead of trying to win the whole deck, which in this case is usually a shoe of 6 or 8 decks of cards.

UNLV Innovates

Last November, I had the privilege of attending a table game focus group, of sorts, at the Red Rock Casino and Resort.  This wasn't a big gaming company showing their latest innovations, but rather UNLV college students in the university's Center for Gaming Innovation.  The center is supported through a grant from the state's Knowledge Fund and helps students develop gaming concepts into commercially viable gaming products and builds an entrepreneurial spirit within the student community.  The Center is run by Dr. Mark Yoseloff, formerly the CEO of Shuffle Master.
